The late Padraig Nugent.

Kilglass man, Padraig Nugent, who lost his life in a road tragedy early on Sunday morning, has been remembered as a beloved father, son and brother whose family “would give anything to have him walk through the door again,” his funeral Mass heard this afternoon.

The congregation at St Anne’s Church in Slatta heard how his family and community had been left deeply saddened by his death and how the suddenness of it demonstrated how precarious life can be.

Symbols of his life brought to the altar included a football, symbolising his love of GAA , a Liverpool jersey remembering his love of the team, a trophy from the intermediate championship of 1999 when he played for his beloved Kilglass Gaels, a cap and a hard hat, a symbol of his dedication to his work.

His son Ryan remembered a wonderful father and recalled stories of their time together and spoke of his father’s laughter.

His sister Helen, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed their gratitude for all the support they have received since the tragic accident. She told his son and daughter Megan that their father loved them saying, “he was so proud of both of you.” She said that having to break the news of his passing to their devastated mother “is something that will haunt me.” She remembered her brother as a person who loved spending the weekends with his friends and recalled stories of his time growing up with her and his two other sisters. She also recalled his love of GAA and his time on the playing fields. “These are memories I will cherish in my heart forever,” she stated.

Following his funeral mass Mr Nugent was laid to rest in Scramogue Cemetery. He was predeceased by his father, JP. He will be sadly missed by his beloved children, Ryan and Megan (and her partner Callum); his adored Mum, Ann; sisters, Geraldine, Trish, and Helen, and brothers-in-law Alan and Michael (Mixer).

He will also be missed by his one and only niece, Hannah; nephews, Steven and Tristan; Megan & Ryan’s mum, Claire; his uncle, Sean, and cousins, John, Michael, and Kevin; Padraig's best friends, Gerry McHugh and Peadar McGuire, very close friends, neighbours, extended family, and especially his beloved Kilglass Gaels community.
