Lidl ‘disappointed’ with planning refusal but still ‘committed’ to new store

Lidl Ireland has said it’s “disappointed” with Roscommon County Council's decision to refuse its planning application for a new discount supermarket in Monksland but still “remains committed” to developing a new store for the area.
In a company statement issued to the Roscommon Herald, it said: "We are disappointed to receive Roscommon County Council's decision but remain committed to releasing a new store in the Monksland and wider Athlone area, bringing Lidl's market-leading quality and value to shoppers in the community as soon as possible."
On Friday, the council rejected Lidl’s planning application for a new store in an area of the county with the fastest growing population.
In its decision to refuse the project, the local authority believed the proposed supermarket would be too car dependent for shoppers and would fail to contribute positively to the vision of the area as a mixed-use district centre.
Lidl Ireland has now four weeks to appeal the decision to an An Coimisiún Pleanála if it chooses to do so.
