The issue of limited graveyard space was highlighted at a recent meeting of the Boyle Municipal District.
Fianna Fáil councillor Sean Moylan suggested that the council fast-track acquiring the ground adjacent to the existing Kimore graveyard for the purpose of expanding its capacity.
The meeting heard that limited graveyard space had become an issue for many graveyards in North Roscommon.
Cllr Moylan urged the council to purchase the land when possible to benefit the Kilmore and Dangan community.
He said that expanding into the nearby ground would be a practical and respectful solution to a growing concern. “I believe it is in the best interest of the local residents and future generations,” he said.
Pointing out that a third of people were choosing to be cremated, Independent councillor Tom Crosby also called for urn internments to be installed in graveyards.
Cllr Moylan informed Cllr Crosby that a pilot scheme was proposed by Senator Gareth Scahill when he was a councillor and this would be looked at into the future.
