Local soccer club pays tribute following passing of its president

Castlerea Celtic FC has paid tribute following the death of its president, describing him as a “true gentleman and legend”.
James Kennedy, Knockroe, Castlerea, passed away peacefully on May 25th in the loving care of the staff of Drumderrig Nursing Home, Boyle surrounded by his loving family.
Castlerea Celtic FC said it was with profound sadness that it had learned of his passing.
In a social media message, the club said: “James dedicated over 70 years of his life to Castlerea Celtic and was at the heart of the club’s growth, development, and success throughout the decades. His passion, commitment, and leadership helped build the strong foundations that the club proudly stands on today.
“James’ contribution to Castlerea Celtic was immeasurable. His loyalty and devotion to the club will always be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
“Everyone at Castlerea Celtic FC would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife Kathleen, his family Alan, Derek, Kenneth, David, and Carola, the extended Kennedy family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
"Castlerea Celtic and the town of Castlerea have lost a true gentleman and a legend whose memory will never fade. May he rest in eternal peace,” the club concluded.
For many years, he was also very well known as a referee on the local soccer scene.
Mr Kennedy will be laid to rest tomorrow, Thursday, in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea following Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's church.
