Lough Funshinagh flood relief scheme gets planning go-ahead

Communities around Lough Funshinagh have been devastated by flooding

An interim flood relief scheme involving a temporary pipeline for pumping water from Lough Funshinagh and discharging it into the local Cross River has got the planning go-ahead from An Bord Pleanála.

A planning application was lodged with An Bord Pleanála in September by Roscommon County Council for the works to be carried out at the flood prone area in South Roscommon.

The aim of the interim measures is to control the flow of water to the Cross River by extracting a sufficient volume of water from Lough Funshinagh.

This is aimed at mitigating the possible increase in water levels, and limit the peak water level that will allow the flood risk to properties around Lough Funshinagh to be better managed.

An Bord Pleanala has granted permission for the works with attached conditions.

This temporary pumping solution will be in place until permanent measures to manage the flood risk are completed.

Roscommon County Council and the Steering Group for the Lough Funshinagh Project are continuing to do the necessary work required to submit an application for planning approval to complete this permanent solution.

It will involve the installation of a 3km underground overflow pipeline from Lough Funshinagh to the River Shannon.
