Major 21 classroom extension approved for Roscommon secondary school
Along with 16 standard classrooms, the planned extension will include five dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) classrooms.
Roscommon Community College has secured planning approval for a major extension, incorporating 21 new classrooms, along with a range of other facilities.
Roscommon County Council has granted permission for the school expansion programme which will see the construction of a new single-storey classroom extension to the western side of the existing school.
Along with standard classrooms, the planned extension at the school campus in Ardnanagh, Roscommon Town, will include five dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) classrooms, administrative offices, a general-purpose hall and a range of ancillary accommodation.
The plans also provide for the construction of a standalone PE hall and changing facilities, alongside new sports infrastructure, including sporting pitches and ball courts.
A key element of the development will see the relocation of Gaelscoil de hÍde from the Galway Road to the site. A separate single-storey nine-classroom school building will be constructed to accommodate this school.
The new facility will include an SEN classroom, administration offices, a general-purpose hall and associated support spaces.
The approved development on the community school's grounds will involve the demolition of five existing outbuildings and extensive upgrades to the current school building, including fire safety improvement works.
The approved plans further include upgrades to local road infrastructure, with alterations to the existing junction of Thornfield Drive and St Theresa's Road, the provision of new vehicular and pedestrian access routes, revised parking and set-down areas, and improvement works to an existing site exit.
Once the new facilities are completed, 10 prefabricated classrooms currently in use on the campus will be removed.
Twenty one conditions have been attached to the planning permission.
