Man given time to get his driving licence
The case came before Roscommon District Court.
A 32-year-old man praised for his honesty in the witness box at Roscommon District Court has been given a chance to get his driving licence.
Dominic Ksiazak, with an address at 3 St Coman’s Park, Roscommon Town, pleaded guilty to furnishing false or misleading information while attempting to apply for a driving licence at the National Driving Licence Service office on Racecourse Road, Roscommon Town, on April 14, 2025.
Sergeant Conor McShane told Judge James Faughnan that gardaí received a notification that a Czech driving licence had failed a number of security checks. Authorities in Czechia confirmed that the licence, which belonged to the accused, did not exist. The court heard that the accused had previous convictions in Ireland for driving without insurance and a hit and run.
His solicitor, Bríd Miller, said her client, who works in human resources, felt very foolish and embarrassed by the offence. While living in Poland, he had seen an advertisement on Facebook purporting to be from a driving instructor in Czechia. He then paid the “princely sum” of €950 for a 40-minute driving lesson around Prague, Ms Miller said, after which her client believed he had passed the driving test.
In the witness box, Mr Ksiazak said he had taken what he believed was the test because of the convictions in Ireland. He reiterated that he felt very foolish and embarrassed.
The judge said it was refreshing to hear such frank and honest testimony. The matter was adjourned until September to allow the accused to get his licence.
