Paddy Joe Burke to launch inspiring memoir this evening in Roscommon

One of Roscommon’s best-known GAA supporters and former barber, Paddy Joe Burke, will launch his inspiring memoir, 'Kindness Has a Long Memory', this evening, Friday, October 30th at the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon Town.

The book will be launched by Joe Finnegan of Shannonside FM. Proceedings will get underway from 7 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.

Widely known for his fierce devotion to the Primrose and Blue and a deep love for his county, Paddy Joe also became renowned for his barber shop in the county town , which he ran for 50 years until his retirement in October 2024.

His shop on Church Street evolved into a legendary social hub, a welcoming drop-in centre brimming with fun and camaraderie, while also providing a refuge for those seeking solace during difficult times.

The book reveals a much deeper, untold story beyond the barber’s chair. Profoundly difficult school years and a painful battle with addiction left the popular figure grappling with years of self-doubt.

Ultimately, his autobiography stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of kindness.

The book details how Paddy Joe successfully transformed his personal struggles with addiction into a profound message of hope for others.

It explores the power of extending a helping hand to others in times of need, the pursuit of true happiness, and a deep faith that has guided him throughout his life.

The story also captures a nostalgic portrait of a changing Ireland, tracing Paddy Joe’s path from childhood in rural 1950s’ Roscommon to the Ireland of today.

Co-written with Roscommon Herald Deputy Editor Richard Canny,  Kindness Has a Long Memory: Paddy Joe Burke – The Untold Story is published by Red Stripe Press and will be available at local outlets and via www.redstripepress.com.

Paddy Joe will also be signing copies of his book at Mulvey’s House of Gifts in Carrick-on-Shannon tomorrow, Saturday, October 31st, from 2 p.m.

Everyone is warmly invited to the book launch in the Abbey Hotel, which commences at 7 p.m., and to the book signing in Carrick-on-Shannon.
