McDermott new Roscommon MD Cathaoirleach

The new Cathaoirleach of Roscommon Municipal District is Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott.

The Oran native succeeds Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice and was proposed for the role at the AGM last week by Cllr Larry Brennan (FF) and seconded by Fine Gael’s Cllr Ruth Conboy.

The new Cathaoirleach referred to a number of projects he was passionate about, one of which is footpaths for the Golf Links Road in Roscommon Town. He is hoping for works to commence on this project in the last quarter of the year.

Cllr Brennan was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach. He was proposed by Cllr Conboy and seconded by Cllr Fitzmaurice.

Cllr Brennan noted that Cllr McDermott has been a long serving member of the council and is extremely hard working. Cllr Conboy said he had great experience and she was sure he would do a great job.

Cllr Conboy acknowledged the hard work Cllr Fitzmaurice did for the county.

Cllr Fitzmaurice thanked everyone for their help throughout the year and said that he was happy that a number of projects had been achieved over the past twelve months. He added: “It has been challenging at times but worthwhile when you see projects getting over the line.” He said he was delighted that the pool in Castlerea had received funding and that “great strides” have been made in relation to dereliction with town and villages becoming more vibrant.
