Mediator to be appointed in Ballagh public realm dispute
The protest over controversial public realm works in Ballaghaderreen was brought to the offices of Roscommon County Council in Roscommon last week where the monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council was taking place.
A mediator is set to be appointed in a bid to resolve the ongoing dispute over the public realm works in Ballaghaderreen.
A spokesperson for Roscommon County Council confirmed that the local authority was “currently in active engagement with the community in Ballaghaderreen in respect of the appointment of a mediator”.
At last week’s council meeting, Independent councillor Michéal Frain repeated his call for a form of mediation to be brought in to resolve the dispute and proposed that it would also involve Oireachtas members.
At the meeting, councillors also agreed to a proposal by Fine Gael councillor Liam Callaghan that representatives from Ballaghaderreen, councillors from the Boyle Municipal District and council officials would come together to engage on the issue.
Local retailers and residents have been protesting daily in the town since early March over fears that the council’s public realm plan to reconfigure The Square will decimate trade and make it very difficult for vehicles to navigate the town.
