A new set of roadworks, which started in Monksland this morning, Tuesday, is set to provide two more months of traffic woes for motorists.

Roscommon County Council confirmed to the Herald that a contractor had commenced works on the installation of traffic signals on the R362 at the KDM new housing development.

Temporary traffic management measures will be in place for the duration of the works, estimated to take about eight weeks until the end of October.

The council recently gave the planning go-ahead to KDM Contracts Ltd. for the construction of 34 two and three-storey houses in Monksland. These houses comprise Phase 2 of a new housing development.

One of the conditions of the planning approval is that a new signalised junction and active travel routes, including a suitably designed pedestrian footway and cycle lane, has to be completed prior to the occupation of any of the houses.

The council also confirmed that separate road works in Monksland on the same R362 road near Westpoint Business Park concluded on Friday evening.

These electrical grid roadworks, which had caused major congestion since May, were due to be finished by the end of July but were hit by weeks of delay.
