Almost €212,000 was generated in speeding fines arising from offences detected by GoSafe mobile safety camera vans in the county in the past two and a half years.
According to an FOI released by An Garda Siochana, between January 1st, 2023 and June 8th of this year, fines totalling €211,600 were collected.
Most of the fines, €126,240, occurred in the Roscommon Garda District, which covers from Kilbride to Clonark and includes a section of the M6 motorway. In the Castlerea Garda District, the amount was €85,360. This district covers Castlerea, Ballaghaderreen, Strokestown and Boyle.
The fine in the initial 28-day period is €160, increasing to €240 in the second 28-day period.
In 2023 in the Roscommon District fines of €75,120 were generated, and €49,200 in 2024. During the same time in the Castlerea District, the figures were €37,280, and €40,880.
According to the figures, up to June 2025 only €1,920 in fines had been generated in the Roscommon District and €7,200 in the Castlerea District. However, An Garda Síochána cautioned about seeing this as a decline, saying there was a time lag between the issuing of a fixed charge notice and the payment of the associated fixed charge.
“A total of 56 days is permitted by law for the payment of a fixed charge. The initial period of 28 days from the date of the fixed charge notice allows for payment at the fixed charge amount,” a spokesperson said.
“A further period of 28 days is permitted to accept payment at the fixed charge amount plus 50%. Therefore, in relation to the data provided, payment for detections in June, May and April may still be outstanding.”
The 2025 figures provided also exclude much of the summer season and notably the high-traffic bank holiday periods during this season.
The spokesperson added that the Christmas period also similarly has high traffic volumes.
