The multimillion-euro funding application to convert one of the county’s historic buildings into a multi-use community facility has not been successful at this stage.

However, the project has been placed on a reserve list and could be in line for funding later.

The council had been seeking funding of €7m for the Edenville House project from the THRIVE fund (the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme).

At a special council meeting in August, the six councillors of the Roscommon Municipal District unanimously agreed to approve the council’s planning application for Edenville House. A refurbished and converted Edenville House could be a massive benefit to the county town, the meeting was told.

The building, which is also known as Black’s House, was planned to be used for creative, cultural, educational, and recreational purposes.

It was stressed at the meeting that there was no guarantee that the council’s bid for funding would be successful.

Recently, it was announced that four landmark heritage buildings in Sligo, Donegal, Monaghan, and Galway had secured up to €27.6m in funding under the scheme.

When contacted, the council said it had been advised by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly that its funding application for Edenville House was unsuccessful.

“The NWRA is not in a position to award funding to us at this time, however they advised that Edenville House has been placed on a reserve list of strand two THRIVE projects that meet the minimum criteria set for funding,” the council said.

It said it has been further advised that in the coming quarter, the European Regional Development Fund programme will be amended based on performance across all schemes and may be able to award funding to projects on the reserve list. The amendment will be introduced in November 2025.
