Roscommon County Council has advertised a new five year contract for its dog control services.
In a tender published on the Government’s e-tender platform, the council is seeking a contractor for both the management of dog warden services and the management of the dog pound at Rockfield, Oran.
The estimated value of the contract over five years is €210,000, totalling more than €1m in the period.
In relation to the management of the dog warden service, the council is seeking a full-time dog warden to be on duty between 9.30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with flexibility when emergencies arise.
The tender documents also note that the local authority may on occasion require an additional full-time dog warden to be on duty at all times during working hours.
The council outlines that this additional dog warden would be required for six month periods and this requirement would be reviewed every six months.
Some of the duties outlined for the roles include door-to-door licence inspections, logging and investigating complaints, impounding stray and uncontrolled dogs, attending court to give evidence on behalf of the council in cases arising from prosecutions taken under the Control of Dogs Act.
According to the tender documents, up to 300 dogs are impounded annually at the pound in Oran, which can cater for up to 15 abandoned, stray or unwanted dogs at any one time.
One pound manager will be on duty at the pound during its opening hours, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The duties involved in its management also involve dealing with people seeking to reclaim impounded dogs or wishing to provide homes for them.
The time-limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is October 10th.
