Planning permission is being sought to erect a memorial statue of double All-Ireland winning football captain Jimmy Murray in his native Knockcroghery.

A recent planning notice confirmed that the Jimmy Murray Memorial committee is applying for planning to erect a honed limestone statue in the centre of the village.

The plans to honour the Roscommon football legend also include new access footpaths at the statue to be located at Knockcroghery townland in the village.

The monument is carved out of Roscommon limestone donated by Lecarrow Quarries, and local stonemason Mark Feeley was commissioned to undertake the project.

Jimmy, or ‘Jamesie’ as he was known to many, captained Roscommon to historic All-Ireland SFC titles in 1943 and 1944, the only Roscommon man to do so.

The acclaimed GAA figure passed away in 2007, in his 90th year.
