Plans for a battery energy storage system near Castlerea town have been lodged with Roscommon County Council.
Old Mill Energy Limited is seeking planning permission for a period of ten years for the proposed development at Knockmurray, Castlerea.
The proposals comprise the installation and operation of one battery energy storage system containing battery energy storage containers.
Battery energy storage systems store excess energy from the power grid, so it can be later used when electricity demand is high.
The plans include one electrical substation and compound, connected to the national grid system via c. 50m of underground cable to the ESB Castlerea 38kV substation; electrical transformers and inverter units; underground cabling and ducting; boundary fencing,; security entrance gates; CCTV; internal access road; associated ancillary site development, landscaping and reinstatement works.
The company’s planning application notes that the operational lifespan of the development will be 35 years and the site of the proposed development has a total area of 0.644 hectares.
County planners are due to make a decision on the development by December 12th.
