A Garda roads policing operation is in place throughout the county until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5th.

A Garda roads policing operation is in place throughout the county until 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5th.

Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints. To date, a total of 48 people nationally have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).

In excess of 1,200 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first 48 hours of the operation.

Gardaí say that notable speeds detected yesterday, Friday, May 1st included: 82 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on the R180 Mount Brown, Dublin 8; 90 km/h in a 60km/hr zone on the N4, Carrick On Shannon, County Roscommon; 147 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on the R245, Milford, County Donegal; 141 km/h in a 100km/hr zone on the N25, Ballyadam, County Cork.

Close to 110 drivers have been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging all road users to support their efforts to keep them and all others on the roads safe this May Bank Holiday weekend.
