The Roosky Bridge Footpath Trial is in place until Sunday.

The new footpath pilot scheme on Roosky Bridge is a “shambles”, a local councillor has said.

A public meeting on the scheme, which involves a one-way system for motorists and new traffic lights, will take place tonight at Roosky Community Centre, organised by the Roosky Residents Association, at 8.30pm.

Cllr Tom Crosby told the Herald that he is totally opposed to the new scheme, which is being piloted from September 23rd to Sunday, October 6th, calling it a waste of money.

“Back a number of months ago, there was a presentation made to councillors in both Roscommon and Leitrim on this proposal by Leitrim County Council,” he said. “I am on record that I was totally opposed to this pilot scheme.”

He said he asked council officials to return to the “drawing board” and to revisit previous plans for a new bridge, which proposed a widening of the bridge to provide for two way traffic and a footpath.

He also suggested that a project similar to the one at Carrick On Shannon Bridge, which has a cantilever footpath, be explored.

“That’s the very minimum that we would accept, that would not interfere with the flow of traffic,” the independent councillor said. “I was told at that meeting that we should move on, but the people of Roosky will not move on until a proper facility is put in place.

“This proposal is causing a shambles in the village. It is not workable, it cannot work and there is huge anger in the village over this. This is the quietest time of the year as the tourist season is over, could you imagine what it would be like in the peak of summer? The traffic lights are out as far as the community and myself are concerned. All you have to do is go down and watch the traffic, it’s a shambles.”

He said that the condition of the bridge was holding the village back and that this needed to be addressed.
