It was a day to treasure for Roscommon supporters at the Hyde on Sunday as Mark Dowd’s men capped off an enthralling display against Galway to win the Nestor Cup for the first time in seven years.

The victory also marked the first time Roscommon won a Connacht senior title on home turf since 2001.

During his classy victory speech, captain Diarmuid Murtagh paid tribute to that memorable team while remembering Conor Connelly, Don Connellan and Ger Michael Grogan, three members of the 2001 squad who have gone to their eternal reward.

The St. Faithleach’s man also remembered the late Jimmy Finnegan, one of the team selectors that year, and Galway native Michael Lyster, widely regarded as the voice of The Sunday Game who passed away in March.
