Roscommon Herald photographer wins Photograph of the Year at Local Ireland Media awards

Gerard O'Loughlin's picture, "Jumping for Joy" was the Photograph of the Year winner at the Local Ireland Media Awards in Mullingar on Thursday evening.

Roscommon Herald photographer, Gerard O’Loughlin, took home the Photograph of the Year award at the 11th Local Ireland Media awards in the Mullingar Park Hotel on Thursday evening.

Gerard’s photograph "Jumping for Joy" showcased the delight among St. John’s Athletic captain, Simon Leonard, his team-mates and supporters after the club’s maiden Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup success last year.

The Roscommon Herald team, including Editor Christina McHugh, Deputy Editor Richard Canny and Sports Editor Ian Cooney, received nominations in four other categories.

Overall, there were a total of 727 entries across 19 competitive categories.

It was a hugely successful evening for the Irish Times Group with seven winners — Hosanna Boulter, Carlow Nationalist, Young Journalist of the Year; Shannon Sweeney, Waterford News & Star, Feature Journalist of the Year; Anthony Hennigan, Western People, Sports Journalist of the Year; Gerard O'Loughlin, Roscommon Herald, Photograph of the Year; Kate Ryan, The Echo, Best Sustainability Journalist; James Laffey, Western People, Innovation Award for the Lunch & Learn Digital Workshop programme for advertisers and Donal O'Keeffe, The Echo, Political Coverage of the Year.

The Local Ireland Media Awards are sponsored by the National Lottery and supported by the media commission, Coimisiún na Meán.
