Coláiste Chiaráin in South Roscommon said it is standing in solidarity with school secretaries and caretakers who are striking over a pensions dispute.

Principal Brendan Waldron was among staff who visited the picket line outside their school yesterday to show support for their striking colleagues.

In a social media message, the school said: “We stand in solidarity with our Fórsa colleagues on strike for pension and leave parity.

“The absence of secretaries and caretakers have left schools without vital services and support. The current situation is unsustainable for schools. It is disgraceful that the government is not actively trying to resolve this dispute that has been created by their own unfair treatment of school staff for decades. Immediate action from FF/FG is needed.”

More than 2,600 members of the Fórsa union nationwide have been involved in the indefinite strike since last Thursday and up to 2,000 schools are being impacted.

School secretaries and caretakers claim they are not being given access to public sector pensions and other entitlements.
