Roscommon senator ‘disappointed’ county gets no new gardaí

The Fine Gael senator said that more gardaí is one of the most effective measures for preventing crime and making people feel safer in their community.

Roscommon senator Gareth Scahill said he is disappointed that no new gardaí have been allocated to the county following the graduation of 154 new gardaí from Templemore college on Friday.

Senator Scahill pointed out that communities in the Northwestern Region will benefit from 21 new gardaí but expressed disappointment that County Roscommon had not been allocated additional services.

“I thought that in the last 12 months we’ve made some very good cases for additional manpower for Ballaghaderreen, Castlerea, and Roscommon Town and I’m disappointed that an allocation of additional numbers hasn’t been made to that particular area,” he said.

The Fine Gael senator said that more gardaí is one of the most effective measures for preventing crime and making people feel safer in their community.

“I am delighted to see more gardaí for the Northwest District. A visible garda presence is central to the government's aim to build safe and secure communities.

“We are working hard to ensure the gardaí continue to have the resources and support they need to protect our communities.

“I’m thankful to our new gardaí for making a commitment to public service and to keeping people in our communities safe. I wish them the very best as they begin their careers with An Garda Síochána in the Northwestern District,” concluded Senator Scahill.
