Roscommon senator Gareth Scahill has been elected Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Joint Committee on Education and Youth.

The Fine Gael senator was elected committee vice-chair earlier today.

This Joint Committee plays an important role in informing debate and examining the key issues affecting the education system, from early education right through primary, secondary, further education and training to higher education.

The joint committee comprises nine TDs and five senators.

Chairperson of the committee is Clare TD, Cathal Crowe.
