Roscommon SPCA's fundraising appeal to help animals like Muffin

Roscommon SPCA has issued an appeal on social media calling for donations to help animals like Muffin, a cat they recently rescued and whose vets bills cost in the region of €1,000.

Muffin’s journey is one of courage and hope. This stray cat arrived unexpectedly at the home of a kind-hearted family, who immediately noticed a large lump on her side. Concerned for her welfare, they contacted Roscommon SPCA for help. They brought Muffin to the vet, where her heartbreaking yet hopeful story began to unfold.

It was discovered that Muffin was pregnant, carrying kittens that she would never meet due to her critical health condition. She had a severe inguinal hernia that required immediate and complex surgical intervention. The heartbreaking decision was made to terminate her pregnancy in order to save her life.

Muffin’s condition was so complicated that specialist care was necessary. A group of devoted volunteers arranged transport, and Muffin was taken to Vet Referrals in Mountbellew. There, she underwent a challenging 3.5-hour surgery. The procedure involved repairing damaged abdominal muscles and using muscle from her gluteus medius to create a life-saving flap for the hernia gauze. Thanks to the skill and dedication of the veterinary team, Muffin pulled through.

Now recovering under close monitoring, Muffin’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the difference that compassion can make. From the family who first welcomed her, to the volunteers and veterinary professionals who worked tirelessly to help her, every act of kindness saved a life.
