Roscommon teams praised in Garda Cup Final
The ‘Player of the Match’ trophy was presented by Sergeant Kelly’s son, Daniel, and his grandson Jack, to Callum Gavican
The 2026 Garda Cup Final was played yesterday afternoon in the glorious setting of Abbey Park, Boyle.
The annual competition is held as a memorial to the late and much loved Sergeant John Kelly of Boyle Garda Station.
This year’s final was contested by the underage teams from Boyle and Kilmore/Shannon Gaels GAA clubs. Despite the high temperatures that the players had to contend with, they produced a fine display of footballing skills- both individually and as a team.
“The Boyle team proved victorious on this occasion, however Kilmore/Shannon Gaels should take great pride in themselves on a great game,” Roscommon Gardaí said. “We would like to compliment the players and coaches from both teams for the manner in which the game was played –the standard of football, the sportsmanship and the determination shown were truly admirable.”

Inspector David Cryan and Inspector Adrian Flynn presented the medals to both teams after the game. Superintendent James O’Leary presented the Garda Cup to the winning Boyle captain, Oisín Kelly. The ‘Player of the Match’ trophy was presented by Sergeant Kelly’s son, Daniel, and grandson Jack, to Callum Gavican following a very impressive overall performance for the Boyle team.
“Thank you to the Kelly family for their continued support for this event & to everyone who attended to support their teams,” the local Gardaí said.
A presentation was also made to referee, Larry Tiernan and Roscommon Gardaí were very grateful to the team of officials for their assistance on the day.
Roscommon Gardaí also thanked Roscommon GAA for organising the competition, especially to John O’Connor of the Northern & Western Board, for his dedication.
“Finally we are so very grateful to Boyle GAA and LGFA for hosting the final again this year in one of the finest club grounds around.”
