Several secondary and local roads across the county are in a treacherous condition this evening, Friday, with black ice.

With temperatures close to and below freezing for most of the day, road conditions have deteriorated further this evening. Rain in the last few hours has been followed by freezing temperatures, leaving many secondary and local roads in a dangerous condition.

Many roads in West Roscommon are particularly bad, with some in the Castlerea/Ballintubber/Ballymoe/Loughglynn areas among the most affected.

Many motorists have taken to social media this evening to warn other drivers about the condition of the roads and to urge them to exercise extreme caution when travelling tonight.

Met Eireann says that scattered showers will move eastwards tonight, some wintry with snow for higher ground and the odd rumble of thunder. Overnight lows of 0 to minus 3 degrees with a slight to sharp frost as well as some freezing fog, all with just light westerly or variable breezes.
