Speed ramps 'making a positive difference' 

Speed ramps in North Roscommon are making a positive difference to road safety, Cllr Sean Moylan has said.

The Tulsk man made the comments at the June meeting of Roscommon County Council.

“Every councillor here is getting lobbied on a daily basis about speeding, in particular outside schools. It is a huge, huge issue,” he said.

He added that in other European countries, there are ramps and road markings outside schools in every village and town.

“You can see around towns and elsewhere that the speed ramps are working, a lot better than I thought they would,” Cllr Moylan said. He added that the ramps at Mockmoyne, Boyle, have made a huge difference.

“I know there are issues with places like Kingsland because there are no street lights. We have to find a work around because you can’t be driving down a road at 3 a.m. and hit a speed ramp,” he said.

“But on the whole, and as a quick fix, they are very efficient.”

It was “most frustrating” that in a few years’ time people in Ballinagare and Tulsk would be “tripping” over pedestrian crossings due to active travel projects, he continued. “But now when we need them, we can get nothing,” he said. “We can see how successful the pedestrian crossing has been in Knockcroghery.”
