A Status Orange Low Temperature/Ice warning has been extended for County Roscommon.

It will be the third night in succession the county will be under a Status Orange warning — the second highest warning issued by Met Éireann.

The current cold snap has meant that a number of schools in the county have remained closed after the Christmas break.

The latest warning comes into operation at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening and lasts until 8 a.m. on Friday morning.

In its latest update on Thursday morning, the national forecaster has warned of dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delay, animal welfare issues and poor visibility.

However, there is a change on the way with temperatures set to rise from Friday as milder air pushes in from the south — signalling an end to Ireland’s Artic blast of weather over the last week.
