Storm damage to historic structures highlighted

Elphin Windmill was badly damaged during Storm Eowyn.

Additional funding is needed to protect historic structures around the county, according to Cllr Emer Kelly.

At a recent council meeting during a discussion on the council's new heritage strategy, Cllr Kelly commended heritage officer Nollaig Feeney but said that funding to protect historic buildings was an issue.

“A lot of the time with these structures it is unclear if they are in public land or private land, and whose responsibility it is.”

She said that Storm Éowyn caused a significant amount of damage to several structures and asked if there was any fund that could be availed of to address this damage. She was particularly concerned about buildings which could pose a risk potentially to livestock or people.

Ms Feeney said that no additional funding for storm damage was available.

Commending Ms Feeney, Cllr Tony Ward called for a list of structures in need of repair to be compiled by the local authority.
