TII criticised over ‘unacceptable’ Oran junction

Dangerous junctions in the Oran area were raised at the May meeting of the Roscommon Municipal District.

Cllr Marty McDermott highlighted the issue, saying it was continuously being brought up by members of the public.

“It has been coming up time and time again,” he said.

He said it was “beyond belief” how Transport Infrastructure Ireland left the junction for Oran Cemetery.

“When you’re coming from the cemetery to the main road, there is a rise in the road,” he said. “And from the Ballymoe direction, there’s no proper slipway coming off into it. Nothing to stop a lorry coming up behind you and crashing into the back of your car.”

He asked that a letter be sent to TII “because I am inundated with complaints about it”.

“Something will have to be done with this junction,” the FF councillor said. “It’s unacceptable the way it is at the moment. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

MD Cathaoirleach Paschal Fitzmaurice seconded the proposal, suggesting that the TII’s design office be written to about the situation.

“Also it is very difficult at times to establish where the Donamon junction is, especially at night time,” he said.

He asked that the letter include a request for better signage.

This was supported by Cllrs Michael Holland and Nigel Dineen.

Cllr Ruth Conboy also highlighted that the junction was used by tractors and trailers, and other vehicles heading to Athleague.
