TII response to N60 junction concerns a ‘disgrace’

Councillors have criticised Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s response to safety concerns at the Donamon junction on the N60, describing it as inadequate and “generic”.

At a meeting of Roscommon Municipal District, Cllr Marty McDermott said he was dismayed by TII’s reply to an email he had submitted about the junction, where traffic turns off the N60 for Donamon onto the old N60 road into Roscommon Town.

Cllr McDermott said the response failed to name either the road number or the parish involved, and branded the agency’s email a “disgrace”.

He had raised concerns about poor visibility for oncoming cars in darkness, warning that there was a strong possibility of an accident at the junction if action was not taken. In his submission, he called for a right-hand slip lane for traffic travelling from the western direction, along with improved signage at the junction.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr McDermott said local residents were also worried about safety at the location.

TII stated in its response that the junction was not deemed to be a collision risk.

Cllr McDermott had asked TII representatives to visit the site and had provided his availability for a meeting.

Other members backed his concerns, with Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice saying it was a “pity” that no turning or climbing lane had been included during construction. Cllr Ruth Conboy said the focus should be on preventing collisions before they happen.

Councillors agreed to write again to TII, urging the agency to visit the junction and review the concerns raised.
