Tommy Morris from Four Roads, an engineering student at UCD, receives his Dermot Earley Bursary from the chief executive of Roscommon County Council Shane Tiernan; the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice; Noelle Earley, daughter of the late Dermot Earley and Leas-Cathaoirleach Larry Brennan.
Two recipients of the Dermot Earley Sports Bursary for 2025, Charlotte Blackweir, and Tommy Morris, have been presented with their awards.
Awarded annually since 2011 by Roscommon County Council, the €1,500 bursary recognises exceptional young athletes from the county who have excelled both in sport and academia.
Charlotte Blackweir, from Taughmaconnell is currently studying Children’s Studies at the University of Galway. She is a multi-talented athlete excelling in camogie, rugby, and football. A key player in Roscommon’s All-Ireland minor camogie victory, Charlotte has also been instrumental in growing female participation in school rugby.

Tommy Morris from Four Roads, an engineering student at UCD, shines in both Gaelic football and hurling, having earned multiple school and county honours, including a place on the Roscommon Herald Senior Hurling Championship Team of the Year. He also recently helped lead Roscommon U-20 footballers in their Connacht Championship campaign.
The bursary pays tribute to the late Dermot Earley, a Roscommon GAA legend and former Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, whose legacy continues to inspire new generations of athletes.

The awards were presented by Cathaoirleach Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice, who praised the winners for their “level of excellence” and acknowledged the support of the Earley family. He also thanked all who were nominated, wishing them continued success, both in their respective sports and their chosen studies.
