A new scheme to revive town centres called the ‘Vacant to Vibrant’ proposed by Junior Minster for Retail Alan Dillon has targeted two local towns in its proposal.

Carrick-on-Shannon and Strokestown were two of 26 towns selected nationally for the project which aims to turn empty shopfronts into new local businesses.

Roscommon County Council and other local departments will be asked to match vacant premises with the needs of the community.

It is hoped footfall will be boosted for the towns because of the scheme, which will also offer business owners supports.

"Empty shopfronts do not create jobs, attract visitors, or support local communities," Deputy Dillon said.

"We need to turn vacant properties into places where businesses can start, grow and succeed,” he concluded.
