WATCH: Castlerea mart's 50-year legacy celebrated as cornerstone of local economy

Castlerea Livestock Mart has played a vital role in the local economy and in the farming community for half a century.

Speaking at a special Mass at the mart, to mark the 50th anniversary, mart chairperson Martin Higgins described the milestone as a "remarkable achievement" and reflected on the impact the mart has had on Castlerea and the wider region since opening its doors 50 years ago.

"It has been an important part of the local economy and a meeting point for generations of farmers, buyers and members of the wider community," he said. "It has brought valuable business and employment to the town and has provided essential services to the farming community throughout the region."

Mr Higgins paid tribute to the mart's founding committee, praising their vision and determination in establishing the business in the mid-1970s.

"They had the vision, courage and determination to establish the mart 50 years ago, laying the foundation for the successful business we have today. We owe them a great debt of gratitude," he said.

The chairperson also acknowledged the contribution of staff, buyers and sellers, hauliers, and committee members, both past and present, who helped shape the mart over the decades.

Particular praise was reserved for former manager Noel Moran and current manager Brendan Egan, noting that the mart has had just two managers since 1976. Their dedication and leadership were credited with maintaining and developing the high standards associated with the business.

"Noel Moran and Brendan Egan have each given many years of dedication and service to the mart and between them they have played a pivotal role in the management and development of our business throughout," Mr Higgins said.

"Their knowledge, professionalism, hard work and commitment have been central to the success of Castlerea Livestock Mart."

Mr Higgins also commended office manager Siobhan Earley for her "magnificent organisational skills" and recognised the work of the many committee members who have contributed to the mart's success over the years.

Concluding, he said the occasion was an opportunity both to reflect on the mart's achievements and to look ahead to its future with confidence.

"We can look back with great pride at what we have achieved and we can look forward with confidence and optimism to the future," he said.
