Aoife O’Rourke will have the chance to join her sister Lisa as a European gold medalist later on Friday when she boxes for gold at the European Boxing Elite Championships in Sofia.
Aoife, who is going for her fourth European title, will face a familiar opponent in the final of the 75kg division — Busra Isildar from Turkey, the boxer she beat to win the world championships in Liverpool a year ago.
The Castlerea boxer — a double Olympian and reigning European champion with titles in 2019, 2022 and 2024 — secured a split decision 4-1 victory against Russia’s Saltanat Medenova in her semi-final.
The bout will take place after 4 p.m. Irish time, and will be live on RTÉ.
Younger sister Lisa won her gold medal on Thursday evening with a confident, skilful performance against Russia’s Anastasiia Demurchian to be crowned 80kg champion.
