Aoife O'Rourke joins her sister Lisa as a European boxing champion

Aoife O’Rourke has joined her sister Lisa as a European boxing champion, retaining her 75kg title with a dominant performance in Sofia on Friday evening.

The Castlerea boxer — now a four-time continental winner — won her final in the eyes of all five judges against Turkey’s Busra Isildar.

It’s a wonderful achievement for the County Roscommon Sister Act who will now return to Castlerea triumphant with gold medals around their necks in a few days’ time.

A messy opening round saw Aoife forcing matters early on, but her left jab scored heavily, and her defence remained intact to take the opening round 5-0.

O’Rourke’s dominance was even more pronounced in the second round as she gauged her distance better, leaving the Turk frustrated ahead of the final round.

Only a stoppage would now suffice for Isildar but there was no chance of that happening as O’Rourke continued to pick her opponent apart to ensure that the sisters' “double act” had a gold lining in Bulgaria this week.

The pair are expected to return home to Castlerea in the next few days where they are assured of another memorable welcome — both as champions together for the first time.
