Four County Roscommon teams struck gold at Saturday’s Connacht Community Games finals in Tuam, including a double for one area in chess.

The Drum/Clonown U-13 chess team retained their provincial crown, and they will be joined in the national finals later this summer by the area’s U-16 team who also won gold medals in what was a red-letter day for the South Roscommon area.

The U-13 team did it the hard way, beating the Leitrim champions in the preliminary round before winning their semi-final against Galway opponents. In the final, they saw off Sligo to make it successive Connacht titles.

Team members included Addhrit Bhushan, Adhiraj Bhushan, Cormac Gallagher, Eleanor Neary, Cuan Ryan, and Aaron Sheehy, alongside their management of Purnima Bhushan and Paula Sheehy.

The U-16 team received a bye into the final where they proved much too strong for Carrick-on-Shannon from Leitrim.

The winning team comprised of Kenny Perkin, Oisín Cooney, Donnacha Hellen, Jake Maguire, James Perkin, and Nikodem Zamir, alongside their management of Kit Perkin and Shan Perkin.

The Roscommon/Kilteevan U-11 chess team made it a hat-trick of victories for County Roscommon teams in chess when they also brought home gold medals to their area.

Alongside manager Alastair Kerr, the team comprised of Meadbh Dempsey, John Hanley, Anvay Kumar, Daithi Mayoh, Lorcan McEvoy, Eanna McEvoy, and Diarmuid McNamara.

Crowning off an excellent day for the county, the Strokestown U-13 boys’ indoor soccer team were also crowned Connacht champions.
