Details of Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke’s opening bouts at the World Boxing Championships have been confirmed.
Lisa will box alongside 18 other women in the 70kg category. She has a bye to the last 16 where she will take on Shirleidis Orozco Martinez of Colombia on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, Aoife also has a bye in the opening round. She's in a group of 18 boxers in the 75kg division, and is through to the last 16 where she’ll take on Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic on Sunday.
In March, the Castlerea sisters secured silver medals for Ireland at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Serbia.
Alongside Adam Hession from Monivea Boxing Club, Aoife is co-captain of the Irish team at these championships.
Overall, there are 17 Irish boxers competing at World Boxing’s inaugural World Boxing Championships in Liverpool between September 4th to September 14th.
The championships will feature over 550 boxers from more than 65 countries in what will be the first championships where men and women will compete at the same Elite championships, outside of the Olympics, for medals.
