Mayo senior football manager Kevin McStay believes that his former club, St. Brigid’s, are in with every shout of bringing the Andy Merrigan Cup back to Kiltoom on Sunday evening.
McStay — speaking to
in Castlebar on Thursday ahead of Mayo’s upcoming Allianz Football League campaign — was manager of the Roscommon kingpins when they became the first club from the county to be crowned All-Ireland club senior football champions in 2013.On this occasion, McStay admits that Brigid’s are “up against it” but feels that the side he managed 11 years ago had just as many obstacles to overcome during their final against Ballymun Kickhams.
“My wife and I, our daughter and her partner — we’re booked in, we’re ready to rock. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
“When I think of Brigid’s, I’ve nothing but warm, happy memories of a lovely time in my life and, I hope, in their life. I’ll be watching it very keenly.
“They’re a really nice footballing team. They’re up against it, but probably not as up against it as we were in 2013, and somehow we won the cup.
“Of course, it can be done. It’s an All-Ireland final day. I’ll be screaming for them because, of course, you will know that they wear the beautiful green and red colours.”
