Roscommon golfer Thomas Higgins has enjoyed another stellar success after he won the AIG Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship.

Both Higgins and Dylan Holmes (Greystones) finished on seven under par after their fourth round in Portumna with the Roscommon man prevailing on the third hole of their play off.

Higgins produced an excellent final round of 68 as he lied in joint fifth place, four strokes behind leader Harry McArdle (Warrenpoint) after his third round.

It was a busy day for Higgins as golfers completed their third and fourth rounds today (Saturday).

Just last week Higgins helped Ireland win the Women’s and Men’s Home Internationals for just the second time in history.

Higgins sunk the winning putt to ensure Ireland won the European Amateur Team Championship final last month.
