O'Connor's heroics not enough for ladies to retain provincial title

The Roscommon intermediate ladies' football panel before this afternoon's TG4 Connacht LGFA Intermediate Championship final against Leitrim at Kiltoom.
Three well-worked Leitrim goals unravelled Roscommon’s hopes of retaining their Connacht Intermediate Football Championship title in perfect conditions at Kiltoom this afternoon.
Leitrim may be in Division Four next season, while Roscommon have been promoted to Division Two, but that gap in league standings was never in evidence as Jonny Garrity’s thoroughly deserved their success.
Aimee O’Connor was Roscommon’s star performer with 0-10, including seven points from play, but she didn’t receive enough support up front on an afternoon when the home side — despite O’Connor’s heroics — struggled to break down the Leitrim defence.
At the other end of the field, Leitrim experienced no such issues as their effective counter-attacking game, coupled with hard, direct running, procured goals at vital times for Ailbhe Clancy, Michelle Guckian and Muireann Devaney.
As a result of this afternoon’s game Roscommon will now enter the same group as the Leinster champions (Westmeath or Wexford) and Antrim for the upcoming All-Ireland Intermediate Championship.
