Pearses find 'extra' gear to punish wasteful Glaveys

Pádraig Pearses set up a county senior football semi-final meeting against Boyle or Oran after overcoming Michael Glaveys, 3-17 to 1-13, after extra time in Lisnamult.
A ten-point victory in Saturday's Hodson Bay Group SFC quarter-final suggests a comfortable afternoon at the office for Niall Murray’s side, but that wasn't the case for last year’s beaten finalists who took advantage of Glaveys’ jitters in front of the sticks to prevail.
Darragh Heneghan’s early goal settled wind-assisted Glaveys but David Murray levelled things up with a green flag for Pearses, with the sides deadlocked at 1-2 apiece after ten minutes.
Niall Heneghan was outstanding for a wasteful West Roscommon side, and even though a four-point interval buffer didn’t seem enough, Glaveys played much better against the elements.
They went 1-8 to 1-2 ahead before Pearses, who didn’t hit a wide over 80 minutes of action, gained some traction to get back on level terms by the 49th minute, thanks to Eoin Colleran’s two-pointer.
Rob Heneghan nudged Glaveys back in front but late scores from Caelim Keogh and Colleran looked to have won it for Pearses, only for, fittingly, Niall Heneghan to kick the equaliser and send the game to extra time.
A couple of two-pointers from Colleran (from play) and Paul Carey (free) left their side four points ahead at the end of the first period of extra time, before late goals from Jack Nevin and John Price sealed a flattering victory for Pearses.
In the McNulty’s Furniture Intermediate Football Championship, St. Dominic’s and Éire Óg confirmed their place in the last four with hard-earned victories.
Despite trailing at half time, St. Dominic’s saw off Fuerty by 1-12 to 0-13 in Kiltoom.
Fuerty were on course for a shock victory, but Anthony Kelly’s side kicked the last four points of the match through Daire Keenan to prevail.
Mike Feely’s goal allowed a wasteful Dominic’s to lead by 1-2 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter.
But Fuerty kicked the final five points of the half, including four from Gearóid Ennis, to lead 0-7 to 1-2 at the break.
A two-pointer from Keith Doyle and an effort from Karol Feerick suggested that Dominic’s were back in control of their own destiny but five points in succession by a combination of Ennis and Owen Rogers propelled Fuerty ahead once more.
An inspirational two-pointer from Eoin McCormack got Dominic’s back on track, before Keenan’s accuracy from frees and play late on sealed the deal.

Éire Óg set up a repeat of last year’s semi-final meeting against St. Michael’s with a hard-earned 0-17 to 0-13 victory over Shannon Gaels at Abbey Park, Boyle.
Shannon Gaels led for the majority of the opening half but a two-point free from Conor Cox edged his side 0-7 to 0-6 ahead at the break.
Éire Óg were able to keep their opponents at arm’s length after the break, and it took a good save from captain Colm Lavin to deny Hugh Molloy.
The winners were second best around the middle third, but a late two-pointer from Cox confirmed his side’s place in the last four.
In the King and Moffatt Junior A Football Championship, Ballinameen sent out a statement of intent with a blistering attacking performance to procure a 5-17 to 1-15 victory against Kilbride in Tulsk.
Both sides struck early goals, with Thomas McGrath and Luke Shally raising green flags for their respective teams to leave the game deadlocked, 1-3 apiece, after ten minutes.
But Ronan Garvin’s 13th minute goal swung the pendulum back in the North Roscommon side’s favour, and they never looked back from there.
By the midway mark, a third goal from Dessie Carlos left his side 3-7 to 1-7 to the good.
Conor Devaney did everything he could to haul Kilbride back into contention with four points from play in the third quarter, but further Ballinameen goals from Dean Casey and Adam Dwyer killed off the tie.

The other Junior A championship game saw Clann na nGael set up a semi-final meeting against St. Aidan’s, thanks to a 2-18 to 0-12 triumph against Western Gaels in O’Rourke Park, Castlerea.
Goals in either half from Dylan Sumner and substitute Cathal Shine sealed the deal for the Johnstown-based side.
Clann were 1-4 to the good after 12 minutes, and when Ian Harney kicked a neat two-pointer, a 1-9 to 0-4 buffer at half time reflected Clann’s dominance.
A couple of two-pointers from Thomas McCann and Ryan Higgins kept Western Gaels in touch but Shine’s contribution of 1-2 off the bench cemented a comfortable victory for Eamon Harney’s charges.
