One of County Roscommon’s leading ladies’ footballers has been ruled out of the upcoming intercounty season through injury.

Jenny Higgins, who had returned to the county intermediate ladies’ football panel, suffered an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury during training before Christmas.

It is the second time that the Clann na nGael star has suffered the injury, having sustained an ACL injury ahead of her AFLW debut for the Sydney Swans.

Higgins had become the first player from the county to sign a professional AFLW contract when she joined the Sydney Swans in 2023.

She returned from injury to play a pivotal role in helping Clann na nGael win the 2024 county senior ladies’ football championship.

Having been part of various Roscommon set-ups since 2010, Higgins was set to return to the county panel for 2025 under new manager Finbar Egan, but she’s due to undergo surgery next week, which will rule her out of the Primrose and Blue’s season.
