Lisa O’Rourke has joined her sister Aoife in the World Boxing Championships quarter-finals after comprehensively getting the better of Colombia’s Shirleidis Orozco in Liverpool on Sunday evening.
The former world champion controlled the tempo in the opening round of her 70kg bout, using her right hand effectively to win the first round on all five judges’ score cards.
The former PanAmerican welterweight champion had no answer to O’Rourke’s enthusiasm and energy in the second round, and ended up having a point deducted for holding.
For the Tarmon native, it was all about staying out of trouble in the final round, and she duly delivered to comfortably reach the last eight and leave herself within a victory of at least a bronze medal.
Her sister Aoife booked her place in the quarter-finals with a victory against Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic in the 75kg category on Saturday evening.
Both boxers are scheduled to fight again for medals early this week. Lisa will be first into the ring on Tuesday evening against top seed Lekeisha Pergoliti of Australia, while Aoife is scheduled back in the ring on Wednesday against Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad.
