Double Olympian and County Roscommon boxer, Aoife O’Rourke, has made a winning start to her IABA World Boxing Championships campaign in Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Castlerea native and co-captain of the Irish team, contesting the 75kg category, defeated Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic at the M&S Bank Arena on an unanimous decision.

O'Rourke dominated the opening round against her more inexperienced opponent, landing her punches more accurately to win the round in the eyes of all five judges.

Her undisputed superiority continued in the second round, forcing a couple of standing counts as blood trickled from the nose of Langerova.

The result was never in doubt in the third round as O'Rourke cruised through to the quarter-finals on Wednesday afternoon against either Italy's Melissa Gemini or Norway's Sunniva Hofstad.

Aoife's sister Lisa will be in action in the 70kg category on Sunday evening when she takes on Shirleidis Orozco Martinez of Colombia, also in the last 16.
