O’Rourke sisters set for quarter-final action in Bulgaria tournament

Lisa and Aoife O'Rourke.

Castlerea boxing sisters Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke will both be in quarter-final action tomorrow, Thursday, at the multi-nations Strandja tournament in Bulgaria.

On Monday in the 75kg division, Aoife O’Rourke impressively defeated her Indian opponent Lovlina Borgohain, a world champion who, like the Castlerea boxer, has also qualified for the Paris Olympics.

Points were deducted from Borgohain in rounds one and two, and she was disqualified on deduction of a third point in the final and third round. The Roscommon fighter now renews rivalries with Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik in tomorrow’s quarter final.

Aoife defeated Wojcik in the semi-final of the European championships last summer on her way to winning gold.

On Monday, her younger sister Lisa stepped between the ropes for the first time since winning gold at a multinations tournament in Poland late last year.

She was up against Thailand’s Janjaema Suwannapheng in the 66kg division, and a narrow win has secured the 2022 World champion a quarter final bout against Poland’s Aneta Rygielska.

The two O'Rourke sisters will feature in the afternoon session tomorrow which begins at 12 p.m., Irish time.

261 boxers from 28 countries are competing in the tournament, hosted in Sofia by the Bulgarian Boxing Federation.
