Roscommon swimmers win gold medal at Special Olympics European Open
The Roscommon Special Olympics team of Anne Marie Donnelly, Shaun Mullen, Brían Óg McGarvey, and Sorcha Hegarty that captured a gold medal in the 4x50m relay at the European Swimming Open in Malta.
The Roscommon Special Olympics club had a very successful outing at this year’s Special Olympics European Open in Malta, returning home with a gold medal.
Anne Marie Donnelly (Roscommon Town), Brían Óg McGarvey (Four Roads), Shaun Mullen (Fuerty) and Sorcha Hegarty (Roscommon Town) combined to win the 4x50m relay event.
Brían Óg also won a silver medal in an individual final, and three members of the team recorded personal bests in their respective individual events.
The club described their four triumphant swimmers as “four brilliant ambassadors,” and also acknowledged the positive impact the travelling support had for the team representing the county, Connacht and Ireland.
“A special word of gratitude and thanks to the parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grannies grandads, cousins and other family members who have travelled in big numbers to watch our athletes compete in these European games.
“They have cheered on every stroke in the pool and we greatly appreciate the wonderful and loud support poolside,” said the club on social media.
The team were joined by long time swimming coach Marie Keane, Chairperson of the Roscommon Special Olympics Club Jacqui McCormack and head of the Irish delegation Bob McCormack.
