A County Roscommon woman’s Olympic dream in Paris has been shattered by injury.
South Roscommon native Aoibheann Reilly, who was competing for a place on the Ireland women’s sevens rugby squad heading for this summer’s Olympic Games, has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury according to a report by
.The scrum-half previously suffered an ACL injury back in 2022 but returned successfully last year.
In a cruel twist of fate, Reilly picked up the injury in her opposite knee when competing in last weekend’s World SVNS Series final leg in Madrid.
Daughter of Stephen and Fionnuala Reilly from Creagh, Aoibheann competes with the international 15s side and helped Ireland book their spot at the 2025 World Cup following a third-place finish in this year’s Six Nations.
She was part of the squad that won the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Perth at the start of this year. The victory over the host team Australia was Ireland’s first-ever series Gold Medal win.
