Castlerea sisters, Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke, will box for World Boxing Championship silver medals later today (Friday).
The Tarmon boxers, who are taking the World Championships in Serbia by storm, are on the cusp of upgrading their bronze medals to silver to possibly leave them one fight away from becoming world champions on Sunday.
On Thursday evening, Lisa — who is also a key player for the Roscommon intermediate ladies’ football team — won her second fight in the 70kg division, producing a terrific display as she outboxed third seed, Saidi Lahmidi from Morocco, to secure a unanimous decision win.
Half an hour later, Aoife made it a double for Ireland as she recorded a split-decision victory against Aziza Zokirova from Uzbekistan.
This afternoon, double Olympian Aoife will be first into the ring as she competes against Nikolina Gajic from Serbia. The fight is due to get underway at 3.30 p.m..
Later this evening, at approximately 7.15 p.m., Lisa — who will be competing for the third day in succession — meets Natalya Bogdanova from Kazakhstan in her last four bout.
Both fights will be available to watch on YouTube.
