Fast-paced action, skill, teamwork and fun were all on display at The Hub, Castlerea, for the county finals of the Cairn Community Games futsal competitions, featuring both boys’ and girls’ U-10 and U-13 age groups. The one-day event was hosted by Castlerea Community Games.

Five teams competed in the U-13 girls’ competition. Elphin were defeated 4-0 by Tarmonbarry/Scramogue in the preliminary round. In the semi-finals, Castlerea lost 5-2 to Ballaghaderreen, while Tarmonbarry/Scramogue were beaten 6-0 by Drum/Clonown. In the final, a strong Drum/Clonown side overcame Ballaghaderreen 5-1 to claim the county title.

Four teams lined out in the U-13 boys’ event. Castlerea earned an impressive 7-2 win over Elphin in their semi-final. Tarmonbarry/Scramogue also recorded a strong victory, defeating Kilgefin 8-2 in the second semi-final. The final between Castlerea and Tarmonbarry/Scramogue proved to be a thriller, with Tarmonbarry levelling the match in the second half before grabbing a dramatic last-second winner to seal an 8-7 victory.

In the U-15 girls’ competition, two teams withdrew, resulting in a straight final between Ballaghaderreen and Drum/Clonown. The sides were level 3-3 at full time, sending the match to extra time. A late goal in the second period of extra time secured a hard-earned and well-deserved win for Ballaghaderreen.

Four teams took part in the U-15 boys’ event. Kilgefin and Castlerea served up an excellent semi-final, with momentum swinging throughout, but Castlerea eventually prevailed 7-5. In the other semi-final, Tarmonbarry/Scramogue held off Elphin to reach the decider, securing another county title to add to their U-13 boys’ success.

Tarmonbarry/Scramogue were the 2025 U-15 boys’ champions and will represent the county once again at this year’s Connacht finals, with one member of last year’s panel returning. Ballaghaderreen, the 2025 U-15 girls’ winners, have four returning players on this year’s panel, giving them valuable experience ahead of the Connacht finals.

Well done to all players, coaches and parents for their commitment, support and involvement throughout the competition. Best of luck to the four winning teams as they prepare for the Connacht Finals in Sligo.

Thank you to the committee of The Hub, Castlerea, for the use of their excellent facilities. Thanks also to Yvonne Hanbury, Samina Burke and Declan Regan for co-ordinating the event. A special word of thanks to referees Martin Loftus and Jamie Flannery.
